Guizhou University for Nationalities was founded on May 17, 1951. It is affiliated to the People's Government of Guizhou Province. It is one of the earliest ethnic colleges established in New China. It is a key university in Guizhou Province, a university jointly built by the People's Government of Guizhou Province and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and a university for Chinese government scholarship students to come to China. The school currently has two campuses. The Huaxi Campus is located in Huaxi District, Guiyang City, a scenic spot with beautiful mountains and clear waters and known as the "Pearl of the Plateau". The University Town Campus is located in Gui'an New District, a national-level new district for industrial-city integration innovation and ecological civilization demonstration. It covers a total area of 2009.8 acres and a total school building area of 796,000 square meters. The school recruits students from all over the country. There are currently 19,069 full-time students and 16,171 undergraduate students in cooperative independent colleges. Since its establishment, the school has trained and supplied more than 100,000 talents of all levels and types to the society, providing important talent support for the economic and social development of Guizhou and ethnic regions.
The school has a faculty team with a reasonable structure and good development trend. There are 1,196 full-time teachers, including 177 senior professional titles and 554 associate senior professional titles; 519 people with doctoral degrees, 822 people with master's degrees, and 545 doctoral and master's supervisors. Among them, there are leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", national candidates of the "Hundred Thousand Talents Project", young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, cultural celebrities of the Central Propaganda Department and "Four Batches" talents, Chinese Arts and Crafts Masters, experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, outstanding scientific and technological talents of the Ministry of Education in the new century, core experts of Guizhou Province, "Qianling Scholars" of philosophy and social sciences in Guizhou Province, experts under the management of Guizhou Province, experts enjoying special allowances from the provincial government, academic leaders of philosophy and social sciences in Guizhou Province, and famous teachers in Guizhou Province.
The university currently has 74 general undergraduate majors, 10 first-level academic master's degree authorization points, 9 categories of 17 professional master's degree points, and 1 doctoral program serving national special needs. There are 4 regional first-class disciplines, 2 key disciplines of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 12 provincial key disciplines (including 5 provincial characteristic key disciplines); 4 national characteristic majors, 3 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 3 national comprehensive professional reform pilots, 3 regional first-class majors, 10 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points, 8 provincial characteristic majors, 7 provincial comprehensive professional reform pilots; 1 national first-class undergraduate course construction point, 3 regional first-class courses. There is 1 provincial and ministerial co-constructed collaborative innovation center, 1 national base for the inheritance of Chinese excellent traditional culture in ordinary colleges and universities, 2 humanities and social sciences research bases of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 provincial and ministerial key research base of the National Ethnic Education Development Center, 1 provincial and ministerial national ancient book protection talent training base, 3 provincial humanities and social sciences demonstration bases, 1 provincial key laboratory, 4 characteristic key laboratories of the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education, 2 2011 provincial "collaborative innovation centers", 3 humanities and social sciences research bases of Guizhou universities, 1 provincial industry-university-research base, 1 engineering technology research center of Guizhou universities, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 provincial graduate education innovation bases, 6 graduate workstations, and 2 provincial talent training bases; there are 2 regional first-class teaching teams, 5 provincial teaching innovation teams, 1 provincial science and technology innovation talent team, 3 provincial philosophy and social sciences innovation teams, and 3 excellent scientific research innovation teams of the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education.
The school has the Institute of Social Construction and Anti-Poverty, the Institute of Public Policy in Ethnic Areas, the Guizhou Institute of National Arts, the Guizhou Mountain Tourism and National Economy Research Institute, the Southwest Yelang Culture Research Institute, the Southwest Nuo Culture Research Institute, the Shuishu Culture Research Institute, the Law Institute, the Guizhou National Science Research Institute, the Guizhou Indigenous National Culture Research Institute, the National Architecture Design Institute, the Guizhou Maotai Town Wine Culture Research Institute, the "Colorful Guizhou" Cultural Collaborative Innovation Center, the National Culture Industry Development Research Center, the National Culture Big Data Industry Development Research Center, and the Karst Wetland Ecological Research Center. In addition, 9 provincial ethnic societies and their research institutions, including the Guizhou National Culture Society, the Guizhou Miao Society, the Guizhou Buyi Society, the Guizhou Dong Society, the Guizhou Yi Society, the Guizhou Tujia Society, the Guizhou Gelao Society, the Guizhou Shuijia Society, and the Guizhou Hui Society, are affiliated with the school, forming a strong research matrix of ethnic folk culture and ethnic issues. In recent years, the school has presided over 766 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including 138 national scientific research projects, 3 major national philosophy and social science research projects, and 1 major research project of the Ministry of Education's philosophy and social science research project; and won 82 scientific research awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels. Teachers have published more than 5,610 academic papers in academic journals at or above the provincial level, including 1,873 papers in core journals such as SCI, EI, SSCI, and ISTP, and published 228 monographs.
The school has established cooperative relations with universities in the United States, Britain, France, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, the Netherlands, Malaysia and other countries, as well as universities in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and has carried out mutual exchange of international students, academic exchanges, cooperative education, teacher training and scientific research cooperation. There are nearly 400 international students from 24 countries including the United States, Russia, South Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Thailand, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tajikistan, Lithuania, Egypt, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Myanmar.
The school has been rated as a national model unit for ethnic unity and progress by the State Council 5 times, a national civilized unit 2 times, and an advanced unit for the national summer "three-down-to-the-countryside" social practice for college students 17 times by the Central Propaganda Department, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Ministry of Education. It has successively won the national "three-five" and "four-five" legal publicity and education advanced units, national energy-saving public institutions demonstration units, and the Ministry of Education's model school for law-based governance. The school party committee has been rated as an advanced party committee in the province 3 times, and the school has been rated as an advanced collective of ethnic unity and progress in Guizhou Province, a civilized unit in Guizhou Province, an advanced collective of spiritual civilization construction in Guizhou Province, a beautiful campus in Guizhou Province, and a green university in Guizhou Province.
The school has always received the cordial care of the leaders of the Party and the country. Comrades such as Hu Yaobang, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, and Li Ruihuan have visited the school one after another. When Comrade Jiang Zemin visited our school, he wrote the inscription "Develop ethnic education and strengthen ethnic unity" and inscribed the name of our school; on the 50th anniversary of our school, Comrade Jiang Zemin wrote the inscription "Strive to develop ethnic education and promote the common prosperity of all ethnic groups"; when Comrade Hu Jintao was the Secretary of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee, he and teachers and students planted the "Communist Youth Forest" on the Huaxi campus.
Over the past 69 years, the school has fully implemented the Party's education policy, adhered to the development path of socialist education with Chinese characteristics, adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, and always adhered to the school-running purpose of serving Guizhou, serving ethnic minorities and ethnic regions, and serving the special needs of the country. It has developed into a talent training base, a scientific and technological research and development base, a base for the inheritance and innovation of excellent ethnic culture, a demonstration base for ethnic unity and progress, and an important think tank for the economic and social development of ethnic regions in Guizhou. At present, all teachers and students of the school are guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and are fully implementing the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Second, Third, and Fourth Plenary Sessions of the 19th Central Committee, the 12th Provincial Party Congress, and the National and Provincial Education Conferences, earnestly enhancing the "four consciousnesses", strengthening the "four self-confidences", and achieving the "two safeguards", focusing on the fundamental task of "establishing morality and cultivating people", comprehensively strengthening connotation construction, promoting the high-quality development of the school, and striving to move towards the goal of a high-level first-class ethnic university.
