Guizhou Normal University is located in Wudang District, Guiyang City, Guizhou Province. It is a provincial full-time general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education. The school's predecessor was Guizhou Education College, which was founded in 1978. In 2009, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be restructured into a full-time general undergraduate college; in 2013, it was qualified as a bachelor's degree awarding unit; in 2015, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching work qualification assessment of the Ministry of Education; in 2016, the school was selected as a construction unit for the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" master's degree awarding project in Guizhou Province; in 2017, it was approved as a provincial "Double First-Class" construction project construction unit.

The school has always adhered to the direction of running schools with Chinese characteristics and the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity. After 43 years of development, it has cultivated the spirit of the Teachers' College of "If others do one thing, I will do ten things; I will not give up until I reach my goal", forged the school motto of "being a model for others", and nurtured the school spirit of "seeking truth and being pragmatic, and constantly striving for self-improvement", the teaching style of "cultivating people with virtue, teaching by words and deeds", and the style of study of "determined to study hard, and integrating knowledge and practice". The school is the first "green university" in Guizhou Province, the first batch of "civilized campuses of universities" and "characteristic cultural schools", and has been approved as the first national "Chinese language education base" in Guizhou Province. It also has institutions and platforms such as the Guizhou Provincial Education Administrative Cadre Training Center, the National Training Base for Principals of Primary and Secondary Schools in Western China of the Ministry of Education, the National Education Examination Scoring Base, the Guizhou Provincial Organizing Agency for the Ministry of Education's Painting and Calligraphy Grade Examination, and the Ministry of Culture's "China Rural Society Research Center (Guizhou)". The school actively serves Guizhou's teacher education and regional economic and social development, and has trained more than 200,000 teachers and education management cadres for Guizhou's basic education, making outstanding contributions to Guizhou's economic and social development, especially basic education.

The school currently has 18 teaching units and 50 undergraduate majors, covering 10 disciplines such as economics, law, education, literature, science, and engineering. There are 13,861 full-time students in the school, forming a multi-level and multi-form talent training system including undergraduate education, graduate education, international student education, and continuing education; there is an affiliated middle school-Guizhou Experimental Middle School. The school has 1,154 faculty and staff, 811 full-time teachers, including 502 associate professors and above, 227 doctors, and 515 masters. Among the teachers, 86 have been awarded the title of talents (teams) at the provincial and ministerial level or above, 4 experts have received special allowances from the State Council, 6 experts have received special allowances from the provincial government, 5 provincial experts, 4 provincial academic leaders, 7 provincial teaching masters, and 43 teachers have been selected as Guizhou Province's 100 Leading Talents, 1,000 Innovative and Entrepreneurial Talents, 100 High-level Innovative Talents, and Provincial Outstanding Young Science and Technology Talents. There are 62 part-time master's and doctoral supervisors outside the school. The school currently has 2 national-level comprehensive professional reform pilots, 3 national-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 1 national-level first-class undergraduate course, 13 provincial-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, and 5 provincial-level comprehensive professional reform pilots; 1 first-class construction discipline in Guizhou Province, 12 provincial characteristic key disciplines, provincial key disciplines, and provincial key support disciplines. There is one national makerspace, 34 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms including provincial academician workstation, provincial "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center", provincial key laboratory, provincial university humanities and social science base, provincial talent base, 2 provincial university entrepreneurship demonstration centers, and 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. In recent years, a total of 122 national projects have been approved, including 61 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 61 National Social Science Foundation projects; 353 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects; more than 170 horizontal projects; and nearly 50 scientific research achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above.

The school adheres to the principle of open education, and has established friendly cooperative relations with universities and educational institutions in the United States, Canada, Thailand and Taiwan, and has joined the "International Education Alliance" and the "China-Thailand Higher Education Alliance". Through overseas internship exchanges for students, teacher visiting training, education management for international students, and the employment of foreign experts, the school has expanded its scope and enriched its channels, and continuously deepened exchanges and cooperation; it has established counterpart assistance relationships with universities such as Central China Normal University, Qingdao University, and Wuhan Conservatory of Music, and has jointly trained postgraduate students with universities such as Central China Normal University, Guizhou University, Guizhou Normal University, and Guizhou University of Finance and Economics; it has signed cooperation agreements with enterprises such as the People's Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, China Telecom, China Unicom, and Inspur Group, as well as local governments such as the People's Government of Wudang District, Guiyang City, the Government of Yinjiang County, and the Education Bureaus of various cities (prefectures) in the province; it has jointly built student internship and training bases with 134 schools including Guiyang No. 6 Middle School, Zunyi No. 4 Middle School, Guiyang No. 2 Middle School, Tsinghua Middle School, and Nanming District Hualin School.

At present, the school is focusing on cultivating its characteristics, deepening comprehensive reforms, promoting the development of various undertakings, and striving to steadily move towards the goal of building a first-class, distinctive, applied university in the region in accordance with its "application-oriented, teacher-trained, and open" school-running orientation.
