Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1965. Since its establishment, it has adhered to the school motto of "virtue and ambition, study hard and practice hard", adhered to the school-running philosophy of "development first, quality-oriented, innovation as the source, and talent cultivation for use", and took the cultivation of senior Chinese medicine talents as its mission, serving the cause of Chinese medicine, ethnic medicine and its industrial development, serving the national and regional economic and social development, and serving poverty alleviation and building a well-off society in an all-round way. The school insists on taking the road of characteristic development, and has now become a Chinese medicine college with Chinese medicine as the main focus, multi-disciplinary support, relatively complete school levels, and integrating teaching, scientific research, and medical care. Graduate education began in 1978, and in 1981 it was awarded the right to confer master's degrees. It is one of the first units approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee to have master's degree authorization.

The school was approved as a key university supported by Guizhou Province in 2004, and was rated as an "excellent" college in the undergraduate teaching level assessment in 2007. In 2016, it became a university jointly built by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. It successfully passed the undergraduate teaching review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education and the professional certification of Chinese medicine and Chinese pharmacy, and was rated as a "civilized campus" in Guizhou Province. In November 2018, the former "Guiyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine" was approved by the Ministry of Education to be renamed "Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine".

The school is located in Guiyang, a forest city with beautiful scenery and pleasant climate. It has two campuses, Huaxi and Jiaxiu. There are more than 15,000 students above the undergraduate level, including more than 1,000 master's students. It has 15 directly affiliated colleges (departments), including the School of Basic Medicine, the School of Pharmacy, the First Clinical Medical College, the Second Clinical Medical College, the School of Acupuncture and Orthopedics, the School of Nursing, the School of Humanities and Management, the School of Sports and Health, the School of Information Engineering (Modern Information Technology Education Center), the School of Continuing Education, the School of Marxism, the Department of Foreign Language Teaching, the Graduate School, the Miao Medical College, and the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Health Preservation; there are 10 research institutes, including traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and ethnic medicine; there are two directly affiliated hospitals, both of which are Class III Class A traditional Chinese medicine hospitals. The first affiliated hospital is the "Guizhou Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine" and the second affiliated hospital is the "Guizhou Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine".

The school currently has 1,010 full-time teachers, including nearly 600 with senior professional titles, and the proportion of full-time teachers with master's degrees or above is nearly 80%, and there are 36 doctoral supervisors (part-time). There are 1 "National Medical Master" and 4 "National Famous Chinese Medicine Practitioners"; there are nearly 50 national well-known experts such as experts with special allowances from the State Council and instructors for the inheritance of academic experience of Chinese medicine experts; there are more than 80 provincial and ministerial well-known experts such as famous teachers of Chinese medicine colleges and universities, experts under the management of Guizhou Province, provincial famous Chinese medicine practitioners, experts with special allowances from the provincial government, and high-level innovative "hundred" and "thousand" level talents. In 2019, Dr. Zhou Ying of our school was selected into the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project and was awarded the honorary title of "Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions"; there are 5 National Medical Master Studios (Stations), 3 National Famous Chinese Medicine Practitioners Studios, 20 National Famous Old Chinese Medicine Experts Inheritance Studios, 1 Guizhou Provincial Ethnic Folk Medicine (Pharmacist) Inheritance Studio, and 15 provincial talent training bases and talent teams.

The school currently has 23 undergraduate majors, covering 6 disciplines: medicine, science, engineering, management, law, and education. There are 27 master's degree authorization points, including 3 first-level master's degree points, 20 second-level master's degree points, and 4 professional master's degree points. There are 32 key disciplines at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 18 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 4 provincial characteristic key disciplines, 7 provincial key disciplines, 1 first-class construction discipline in Guizhou Province, and 1 first-class construction discipline in the region.

There are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national excellent TCM talent reform pilot project, 1 national comprehensive professional reform pilot project, 1 national college student off-campus practical education base, 3 national high-quality video open courses, and 4 national characteristic majors. There are 3 provincial characteristic majors, 7 provincial exemplary undergraduate majors, 4 provincial comprehensive professional reform projects, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 provincial excellent talent education and training plan construction projects, 13 provincial high-quality courses, and 2 provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship training centers. In the past five years, the school has won 21 provincial first-class construction projects and 51 provincial graduate education innovation plan projects; won 14 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 1 special prize and 4 first prizes; the school has edited and participated in the editing of 309 national planning textbooks, including 33 editors and 98 deputy editors. In recent years, the average annual employment rate of undergraduate graduates has been above 90%, and the employment rate of graduate students has reached more than 95%.

In the past five years, the school has won 30 scientific research achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above (2014-2018); undertaken 1,668 scientific research projects (2014-2018), including 131 national projects (2014-2018); the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects in 2017, 2018, and 2019 has ranked among the top ten national universities and research institutions of traditional Chinese medicine for three consecutive years; obtained 135 patent authorizations; published 218 monographs; published 4,178 papers, including 932 core journals and 164 SCI papers. The school has continuously increased its efforts in the construction of scientific research platforms, and currently has 31 scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 5 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 1 national engineering technology research center (co-built), 1 national drug clinical research base, and 1 national Chinese herbal medicine industry technology system test station. In 2009, it was rated as "National Excellent Unit for the Construction of Modernized Science and Technology Industrial Base of Traditional Chinese Medicine" by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and in 2011, it was rated as "Excellent Team of Science and Technology Management in Colleges and Universities during the 11th Five-Year Plan" by the Ministry of Education.

The school vigorously carries out quality education, and students have outstanding innovative practical ability. Our school's "College Student Youth Volunteer Association" is one of the first youth volunteer associations in colleges and universities nationwide. In 2011, it was rated as "Top Ten Outstanding Groups of College Students Participating in New Rural Construction in the Second National Conference"; "AIDS Prevention Volunteer Association" was rated as "Red Ribbon Health Package 'Hundred Schools Entering Thousands of Enterprises' Activity Advanced Collective" by the State Council AIDS Prevention Office, the Ministry of Health, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and other units. "College Student Medical Science Association" established in 1982 is one of the earliest college student science and technology associations in colleges and universities nationwide. In the previous "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, the school won 1 special prize, 5 second prizes, and 20 third prizes, ranking among the top universities in Guizhou in terms of both the number and level of awards; in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the school won 1 silver prize and 2 bronze prizes; in the "National Chinese Medicine Society Cup Chinese Medicine Professional Student Knowledge and Skills Competition", the school won the first prize in the group; in the "Huiyigu Cup" 2019 Second National Chinese Medicine College Students' Clinical Ability Competition, the school won the first prize in the group; in the national finals of the "National Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine Knowledge Competition", the school won the second prize in the group; and in the "Clinical Medicine Skills Competition" of Guizhou Medical Colleges and Universities. A large number of outstanding young talents and innovative entrepreneurial teams represented by the "National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award", "China Volunteer Service Gold Award", "National Top 100 Volunteers", "National Outstanding Communist Youth League Members", "Three Going to the Countryside National Advanced Workers", "National Outstanding Young Students of Higher Chinese Medicine Colleges", and "Xiaoping Science and Technology Innovation Team" have emerged.

With an open vision, the school actively carries out exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad to serve the country's "Belt and Road". The school has the qualifications to recruit and train foreign students, and carries out academic education, short-term training and exchange student programs; it has successively carried out exchanges and cooperation with universities and scientific research institutions in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and carried out Sino-Korean joint free clinic services; the Ministry of Education's International Joint Laboratory, Overseas Practice Base, Sino-German Cardiac Rehabilitation Base and other projects have been carried out smoothly; the China-ASEAN Traditional Medicine and Ethnic Medicine Academic Forum has been held continuously, and the school's international influence has been continuously improved.

Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has seized the precious opportunities of the accelerated development of Guizhou's medical and health care, higher education and the rapid development of traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine industries, actively adapted to the needs of building a well-off society in an all-round way and the accelerated development of Guizhou's economy and society, concentrated on construction, and gathered people's hearts for development. The school has achieved a transformation from expanding the scale of school operation and paying attention to infrastructure construction to focusing on the connotation construction of disciplines, majors, scientific research, etc., and effectively improving the quality of talent training. Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based in Guizhou and faces the whole country. It is working hard to build the school into a high-level traditional Chinese medicine university with coordinated development of multiple disciplines, distinctive ethnic medicine characteristics, and a certain influence in China.
