Kunming University of Science and Technology was founded on September 4, 1954, and was then named "Kunming Institute of Technology". In 1995, it was renamed "Kunming University of Science and Technology". In 1999, the former Kunming University of Science and Technology merged with the former Yunnan University of Technology to form the new Kunming University of Science and Technology. The school currently has three campuses, Chenggong, Lianhua, and Xinying, covering an area of ​​3,915 acres. The main campus is Chenggong Campus, located in Chenggong University Town, Kunming.

After more than 60 years of development, the school has now become a comprehensive university with engineering as the main focus, combining science and engineering, with distinct industry and regional characteristics, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. It is the largest key university in Yunnan Province with a complete range of levels and categories, and plays an important role in China's non-ferrous metal industry and regional economic and social development. Among them, Professor Qu Weide pioneered the "impact shock absorption principle", which was applied to the development of my country's first artificial earth satellite; Professor Liu Beichen invented the world's first inverted arch cable bridge; Professor Li Menggeng invented the "crude tin electric heating continuous crystallization machine lead and bismuth removal process and equipment", which was praised by the Western metallurgical community as "the greatest invention of tin metallurgy in the 20th century". Together with the "solder vacuum separation lead and tin technology" invented by Professor Dai Yongnian, it constitutes the modern pyrometallurgical tin refining technology, which has been promoted to tin smelters around the world. At the same time, the "internal heating multi-stage continuous vacuum distillation metal separation technology" invented by the school is world-leading, and the "large-scale, continuous, and automated microwave metallurgical reaction device" has achieved independent innovation in 10,000-ton complete sets of equipment. The "nickel smelting innovation technology system of top-blowing smelting-flash smelting-self-heating smelting three-furnace linkage" is the world's first. The new technology and new equipment for vacuum distillation of complex tin alloys have developed the world's tin refining level to a new height. The key technology of vacuum gasification separation of precious metal alloys has built a new generation of green and efficient precious metal refining technology. Primate targeted gene editing technology has been evaluated as a milestone in the study of human disease models..., making important contributions to the country and even the world's scientific and technological progress.

On January 21, 2015, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in an important speech during his inspection of Yunnan: "Yunnan has relatively rich scientific and educational resources. It has both nationally renowned universities such as Kunming University of Science and Technology, high-level research institutions such as the Kunming Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and many provincial scientific research institutes. We must make good use of these conditions and take a solid path of innovation-driven development. We must gather innovative talents, adhere to the combination of training and introduction, and make up for the lack of innovative talents in Yunnan." Kunming University of Science and Technology consists of 1 academic department, 27 colleges, 7 research institutes, 14 clinical teaching bases (including 10 affiliated hospitals, 3 teaching hospitals, and 1 internship hospital), 3 applied talent training bases, and an urban college that specializes in training ordinary undergraduates in higher vocational education; it also has a graduate school. There are 4,001 faculty members, including 2,732 full-time teachers and 1,861 professors and associate professors. Since 2000, Kunming University of Science and Technology has achieved many highlights in its innovative development. It has won 1 first prize, 6 second prizes in national teaching achievement awards, and 72 provincial teaching achievement awards; it has won 1 first prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 6 second prizes in the National Technological Invention Award, 9 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. Kunming University of Science and Technology is a demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform of the Ministry of Education and a selected school for the "National College Students' Innovative Experimental Program". At present, the school has signed cooperation agreements with 110 universities and research institutions in 36 countries and regions, and has co-built a Confucius Institute with Souphanouvong University in Laos and a Confucius Classroom with NEXT Education Group in Denmark. It is the Chinese leading university in the Yunnan-Thailand University Alliance and has set up three overseas schools in Thailand. It has been selected as a new base for local universities in the national "Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Plan", and foreign experts from the school have won the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Award and the Chinese Government Friendship Award. In 2020, our school has 1,013 international students of various types studying in China.
