Yunnan Normal University is a provincial key normal university with a long history and excellent traditions. It is a "provincial and ministerial co-construction" university of the Ministry of Education and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government, and one of the 100 key universities in the national central and western basic capacity improvement project.

After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University moved to Kunming to form Southwest Associated University, which consists of the College of Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Law and Business, and Normal College. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the three schools that formed the Associated University in 1946 demobilized and returned to the north. The Normal College remained in Kunming as an independent school and was named National Kunming Normal College. It was renamed Kunming Normal College in 1950 and Yunnan Normal University in 1984. After more than 80 years of development, it has trained more than 300,000 talents of all levels and types for the country, and is known as the "cradle of teachers on the red soil plateau".
The school covers an area of ​​3,300 acres, with 24 colleges, 2 independent colleges, 29 affiliated and cooperative primary and secondary schools and kindergartens. The school has more than 32,000 full-time doctoral, master's and undergraduate students, and more than 16,000 adult continuing education students; the library has a collection of 3.7504 million paper documents, 1.188 million electronic book platforms, and 35 basic and core databases in Chinese and foreign languages. It is the "Sixth Batch of National Key Ancient Books Protection Units", the Chairman and Secretary-General of the Library and Information Work Steering Committee of the Yunnan Higher Education Teaching Steering Committee, and the Yunnan Provincial Document Information Service Center of the China Higher Education Document Assurance System (CALIS). Journal of Yunnan Normal University (Natural Science Edition) is now a core journal of Chinese science and technology. Journal of Yunnan Normal University (Teaching and Research on Chinese as a Foreign Language Edition) is an academic journal of linguistics and is now a core journal of Chinese humanities and social sciences (extended edition).
The school has 10 major disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art, forming a multi-disciplinary and coordinated development of disciplines and majors. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 15 disciplines ranked in the top 70% of universities nationwide, including geography in the top 20% and education in the top 40%. There are 87 undergraduate majors, including 15 national first-class discipline construction sites, 22 provincial first-class discipline construction sites, 3 national first-class undergraduate courses, and 15 provincial first-class undergraduate courses.
