Yuxi Normal University is a provincial full-time general undergraduate college. In 1978, it was approved by Yunnan Province to establish the Yuxi Normal College Class. In 1983, it was approved by the Yunnan Provincial People's Government to be rebuilt into the Yuxi Normal College. In 1992, it was approved by the former State Education Commission and renamed the Yuxi Normal College. In 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish Yuxi Normal University. In 2007, the school passed the undergraduate teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and in 2017, it passed the undergraduate teaching review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it became a demonstration college construction unit for the cultivation of applied undergraduate talents in Yunnan Province. The school is located in Yuxi, the hometown of Nie Er, which is one of the famous "Top Ten Leisure and Livable Ecological Cities in China" in central Yunnan. It covers an area of ​​1,014 acres and is the local college closest to the provincial capital Kunming.
