Gansu University of Chinese Medicine is a university jointly established by the Gansu Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a university approved by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the "Reform Pilot Program for Excellent Doctors (TCM) Education and Training Program", a "Chinese Government Scholarship" international student training institution, and a "5+3" integrated enrollment institution for TCM majors.

The predecessor of the school was Gansu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was founded in 1978. In 1989, the school founded the Tibetan Medicine Department on the basis of the Tibetan Medicine major of Gannan Prefecture Health School, and gradually developed into a Tibetan Medical College with the qualification to confer master's degrees. In 2014, Dingxi Normal College was integrated as a whole. In 2015, the school was officially renamed Gansu University of Chinese Medicine. In 2017, the first phase of the Heping Campus was completed and put into use, and the overall relocation of teaching and administration was gradually completed. In 2018, it successfully passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education and signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After forty years of inheritance and hard work, the school has achieved the two major goals of "improving the level of school operation" and "expanding the space for school operation".

The school currently has four campuses, Heping Campus, Wulipu Campus, Dingxi Campus and Gannan Campus, forming a "one school and four districts" school-running pattern. The functional layout of the four campuses is: undergraduate professional talent education base, high-level talent training and adult continuing education base, application-oriented professional talent training base, and ethnic medicine professional talent training base. The Heping campus, where the main campus is located, covers an area of ​​1,050 acres and is located in the Heping Development Zone of Lanzhou City. It is located at the eastern gate of the capital of Gansu Province. It is adjacent to Xinglong Mountain, the first famous mountain in Longyou, in the east, Gaolan Mountain, the key to Jincheng, in the west, Guantangou, the beautiful Guantan Valley in the south, Lianhuo Expressway, the main thoroughfare of the Silk Road, in the north, and the surging Yellow River in the distance. It is adjacent to many universities, and the humanities are endless, and the medical education is unique.

The school has 21 teaching institutions (including the First Clinical Medical College co-built with Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and the Second Clinical Medical College co-built with Lanzhou Municipal Government based on Lanzhou First People's Hospital), 4 directly affiliated institutions, and 3 scientific research institutions. There are 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 7 non-directly affiliated hospitals, and 132 practical teaching bases (including 11 affiliated hospitals). There are 12 provincial teaching teams and 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. At present, it recruits students from 15 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country. There are 17,135 full-time students, including 12,441 undergraduates, 1,674 junior college students, 2,660 master's students, 148 doctoral students, and 129 international students. The employment rate of graduates has remained above 90% for many years.

The school is a traditional Chinese medicine university with the right to confer doctoral degrees in three first-level disciplines: traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. There are 7 disciplines, including medicine, science, engineering, economics, management, education, and literature, including 14 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 3 provincial characteristic disciplines (Class A), 7 provincial key disciplines, 9 provincial medical and health key disciplines, and 2 provincial key disciplines of universities. There are 32 undergraduate majors, 11 junior college majors, 3 national characteristic majors, 7 provincial characteristic majors, 3 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 7 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. There is 1 postdoctoral research mobile station, 3 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization sites, 5 first-level discipline academic master's degree authorization sites, and 5 first-level discipline master's professional degree authorization sites. It has the right to confer master's degrees to people with equivalent academic qualifications and train university teachers to pursue master's degrees on the job. There is 1 provincial and ministerial key laboratory, 3 TCM research level 3 laboratories of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 6 Gansu Provincial Key Laboratories, 2 provincial key laboratories of Gansu universities, 2 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of Gansu universities, 2 provincial engineering laboratories, 5 provincial and ministerial engineering technology research centers, and 2 new think tanks of Gansu universities.

The school is the technical support unit of the Gansu pilot project of the fourth national survey of traditional Chinese medicine, the leading guidance unit of Gansu Province for the construction of the seed and seedling breeding base of traditional Chinese medicine required for national basic medicines, the leading unit of the formulation of authentic traditional Chinese medicine standards in Gansu Province, the "Demonstration International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases with Traditional Chinese Medicine" of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the permanent unit of the Secretariat of the Gansu Provincial Technical Committee for Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the leading unit of the Dunhuang Medical Research and Cultural Heritage Professional Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies. At present, the total amount of paper document resources in the library is 811,900 volumes, including more than 800,000 paper books, 23,809 thread-bound ancient books, 29,560 foreign books, and 43,270 paper periodicals; it has 49 databases of various types, 930,000 electronic books, and 270,000 electronic periodicals. In the past five years, it has undertaken 826 national, provincial, ministerial and other scientific research projects, and won 75 scientific research awards (including 9 provincial and ministerial awards) as the first completion unit, and obtained 145 patents and software works (including 32 national patents). Published 533 academic monographs and textbooks, and published 2,646 academic papers. Sponsored three academic journals: "Journal of Gansu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine", "Journal of Chinese Pediatrics", and "Gansu Primary Health", among which "Journal of Chinese Pediatrics" is a series of journals of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school's directly affiliated hospitals have 122 in-hospital preparations, which have achieved good social and economic benefits.

Through holding TCM training courses, TCM practice and TCM theory training courses, carrying out TCM training, cultural promotion and free clinics, a large number of TCM workers have been trained for countries along the "Belt and Road". Every year, teachers are selected to participate in academic exchanges and training abroad, and many groups of visiting groups from foreign universities and health institutions are received. International experts are invited to the school from time to time to hold academic lectures to strengthen academic exchanges. 121 international students from 18 countries including Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Ukraine have been enrolled to study at the school. The "Silk Road" special scholarship has been established to support outstanding foreign students who receive undergraduate and postgraduate education in Gansu and long-term foreign students with excellent academic performance who study in Gansu.
