Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1954. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has become a higher Chinese medicine college with high teaching, scientific research and medical levels, and has a certain influence at home and abroad. The school was the first in the country to obtain the excellent conclusion of the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2004, and the first unit in the country to pass the undergraduate Chinese medicine professional certification of the Ministry of Education in 2007. In 2018, it was approved as a "high-level university and superior and distinctive discipline construction university" in Heilongjiang Province. In 2021, it was approved as a university jointly built by the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The school has 16 colleges, 14 affiliated hospitals (4 directly affiliated), 1 Chinese Medicine Research Institute, 1 Chinese Medicine Higher Education Research Institute, 26 teaching hospitals and 70 internship bases. There are 27 undergraduate majors, covering 5 disciplines including medicine, science, engineering, management and law. There are 4 first-level disciplines and 31 second-level disciplines with the right to confer doctoral degrees; there are 7 first-level disciplines and 36 second-level disciplines with the right to confer master's degrees; there is 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point and 4 master's professional degree authorization points. There are 18,288 full-time students, including 569 doctoral students, 3,175 master's students, 14,263 undergraduates, 7 junior college students, 219 international students, and 55 preparatory students.

The school has 4 postdoctoral research stations for traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and pharmacy. It is a national first-class characteristic specialty (Chinese medicine, drug preparations and acupuncture and massage) and the first second-class characteristic specialty (Chinese medicine) construction site. The innovation experimental zone for the training model of traditional Chinese medicine talents is the first batch of innovation experimental zones for the training model of talents of the Ministry of Education, and the innovation experimental zone for the training model of clinical traditional Chinese medicine talents is the innovation experimental zone for the training model of talents in Heilongjiang Province. Eight undergraduate majors, including Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, rehabilitation therapy, acupuncture and massage, clinical medicine of Chinese and Western medicine, pharmacy, Chinese medicine resources and development, and medical experimental technology, were rated as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 10 undergraduate majors, including nursing and pharmaceutical preparations, were rated as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. In the fourth round of national subject evaluation, Chinese pharmacy ranked first and Chinese medicine ranked fourth, becoming one of the three Chinese medicine colleges and universities in the country to be rated as "A+" subjects. The school has 4 national key disciplines, 21 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 15 provincial key disciplines, and 19 provincial leading talent teams; there are 3 national teaching teams, 5 provincial teaching teams, and 1 provincial curriculum ideological and political construction teaching team; there are 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, 8 national quality courses, 8 national quality resource sharing courses, 16 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 6 provincial curriculum ideological and political construction demonstration courses, and 22 provincial quality courses; won 1 first prize and 1 second prize for excellent textbooks in the first national textbook construction award, 1 special prize for excellent textbooks in the first provincial textbook construction award, 3 first prizes, and 3 second prizes; there is 1 national curriculum ideological and political demonstration project and 1 national virtual teaching and research room. The school has twice won the title of National Excellent Higher Education Research Institution, and has won 2 first prizes, 7 second prizes, and 65 provincial teaching achievement awards for national teaching achievements. The teaching and experimental center is the first batch of "national experimental teaching demonstration centers" determined by Chinese medicine colleges and universities nationwide; the Chinese medicine museum has been identified as the Heilongjiang Chinese Medicine Museum and selected as the national popular science education base from 2021 to 2025; the Chinese medicine literature retrieval center has been identified as the Heilongjiang branch of the Chinese medicine literature retrieval center, and is the first batch of designated units for scientific and technological project retrieval of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The school currently has 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory, 1 research center of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3 key research rooms, and 10 third-level laboratories; there are 1 Heilongjiang Provincial Engineering Center, 8 key laboratories, 3 clinical medicine research centers, 5 key laboratories of general colleges and universities, and 2 school-enterprise cooperation engineering technology centers; there is 1 international science and technology cooperation base for traditional Chinese medicine of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 international science and technology cooperation base for traditional Chinese medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 1 Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Platform. It is currently the chief scientist unit of the national "973 Program" project, and has successively obtained 3,829 scientific research projects of various levels and types, including 5 national 973 projects and projects, 1 863 project, and 8 "13th Five-Year Plan" National Key R&D Program projects; it has won 1,641 awards of various levels and types, including 1 second prize in the National Technological Invention Award, 8 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Medical and Pharmacy Awards, 1 Wu Jieping Pharmaceutical Innovation Award, 2 first prizes in the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Higher Education Institutions, 4 first prizes in the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, 3 first prizes in the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 18 first prizes in the Science and Technology Award of Heilongjiang Province, 1 first prize in the Science and Technology Award of the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research, 1 first prize in the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association, and 2 first prizes in the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Acupuncture Society. The dissertations written by the doctoral students trained by the school were awarded the "National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation" by the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council in 2008 and 2012 respectively. The total value of the school's teaching and scientific research equipment is 485 million yuan, including a number of large-scale precision instruments and equipment such as superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometers. It is at the international advanced level in the research of serum pharmacological chemistry of traditional Chinese medicine and the basic research of the efficacy of natural Chinese medicines. It is at the leading level in China in the research of prescription compatibility rules, acupuncture mechanism research and clinical research on major diseases such as internal medicine, gynecology, and kidney disease treated with traditional Chinese medicine.

The First Affiliated Hospital of the school (the First Clinical Medical College and the School of Nursing) is a national TCM clinical research base construction unit, a national demonstration TCM hospital, a national major epidemic integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment base, and the first batch of standardized training bases for TCM residents and general practitioners of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Second Affiliated Hospital (the Second Clinical Medical College, the School of Acupuncture and Massage, and the School of Rehabilitation Medicine) is the first TCM hospital in Heilongjiang Province to be recognized as a national drug clinical trial institution, and is one of the first batch of modern TCM hospital construction units in the country. The Affiliated Third Hospital (Third Clinical Medical College) was originally affiliated to the State Grid Heilongjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. and was transferred in December 2018. It is managed as a public welfare Class II institution and is planning to build a tertiary hospital of integrated Chinese and Western medicine with Chinese medicine as the main focus and integrated Chinese and Western medicine as the characteristics. The Affiliated Fourth Hospital (Fourth Clinical Medical College, Heilongjiang Rehabilitation Hospital) was originally affiliated to the Heilongjiang Disabled Persons' Federation and was transferred in June 2019. It is a tertiary rehabilitation hospital integrating public welfare, comprehensiveness and demonstration. It is striving to build a new modern Chinese medicine hospital led by rehabilitation characteristics. The four affiliated hospitals currently have more than 4,500 beds, 25 national key specialties, 31 provincial key specialties, and an average annual outpatient volume of 1.5 million people. They have set up the banner of the development of traditional Chinese medicine in the province and have made positive contributions to protecting the health of the people of Heilongjiang and promoting the reform and development of medical and health undertakings.

The school currently has 4,044 faculty and staff (845 at the main campus), 1,121 full-time teachers, 164 doctoral supervisors, 610 master's supervisors, 36 people enjoying special allowances from the State Council and provincial governments, 2 members of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, 7 members of the Higher Education Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 6 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 7 national candidates for the Hundred, Thousand and Thousand Talents Project, 2 national advanced workers, 2 national outstanding science and technology workers, 1 national master of traditional Chinese medicine, 4 national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, 2 national teaching masters, 1 national model teacher, 5 national outstanding teachers, 2 national teaching masters of traditional Chinese medicine colleges, 1 national May 1st Women's Model, 2 national May 1st Labor Medal winners, 1 winner of the National Outstanding Contribution Award for Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 chief scientist of the Qihuang Project, 6 Qihuang Scholars, 5 Young Qihuang Scholars, 2 Longjiang Science and Technology Talents, and 17 Longjiang Scholars. The school has launched the "Outstanding Innovative Talent Support Program" and "Outstanding Young Backbone Teacher Support Program" to strive to build a team of high-quality talents and comprehensively enhance the school's core competitiveness.

The school has the only drug safety evaluation center (GLP laboratory) in the three northeastern provinces, and has established the Chinese medicinal materials GAP Center of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine. It is now the leading unit of the "Provincial Pharmaceutical Industry School-Enterprise Cooperation Professional Committee". The "China North Medicine Garden" project, which is planned and constructed with the Qinghe Chinese medicinal materials seed and seedling breeding base as the core, has been successfully approved as the first national Chinese medicine health tourism demonstration base. The school has been appointed as the chairman unit of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Chinese Medicine Majors of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education for two consecutive terms, becoming the only provincial undergraduate university in the province to be appointed as the chairman unit of the Teaching Guidance Committee. The school is also the chairman unit of the Chinese Medicine Chemistry Professional Committee, the Chinese Medicine Identification Professional Committee and the Reproductive Medicine Professional Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine, the executive director unit of the Council of the Chinese Society of Chinese Medicine, the chairman unit of the Chinese Society of Chinese Medicine Formula Branch, the vice chairman unit of the Chinese Acupuncture Society, and the vice chairman unit of the National Association of Higher Education of Chinese Medicine.

The school is qualified to accept foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan for academic education. It is one of the first institutions approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit international students in China. It has carried out education, medical and scientific cooperation and exchanges with more than 40 medical schools or research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions in the world. At present, the school has 140 long-term international cooperation projects, accepts more than 500 visiting scholars from abroad, and trains more than 5,000 foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The world's first Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine co-founded by the school, London South Bank University and Harbin Normal University has been rated as an "Advanced Confucius Institute" by the Ministry of Education and Hanban for many times, and has become one of the first "Model Confucius Institutes" in the world.

The school founded the "Longjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine Forum", hosted large-scale international academic conferences many times, held the "China-Russia Biomedicine Forum" with the Amur State Medical College of Russia, and jointly initiated the establishment of the China-Russia Traditional Chinese Medicine Innovation and Development Alliance, established the China-Russia Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and jointly applied for international cooperation projects, making every effort to build the discipline of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine into a world-class discipline. The school cooperated with the University of Adelaide in Australia to establish the world's first Institute of Traditional Medicine; and cooperated with the American Chinese Medicine Chamber of Commerce to establish the American branch of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, becoming the world's first institution to offer a bachelor's degree program in Chinese medicine overseas. The school has also been identified as a construction unit of the "China-Central and Eastern Europe Chinese Medicine Center" project between the Chinese and Hungarian governments.
