Wanxi University is a provincial comprehensive public undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education. Its history can be traced back to the "Anhui Provincial Third Class Agricultural School" founded by Mr. Zhu Yunshan, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress in 1918. In March 2000, it was merged by the former Lu'an Normal College, Wanxi United University and Lu'an Normal School. The school is located in Lu'an, a historical and cultural city in Anhui Province, which has won the titles of "National Garden City", "National Sanitary City", "Chinese Model City for Human Settlement Environment" and "Top 200 Chinese Characteristic Charming Cities". Lu'an is surrounded by mountains and borders the Huai River, connecting the east and the west, and has a superior location. There are 3 national highways, 312, 206, and 105, 4 railways, including Ningxi, Hejiu, Fuliu, and Shanghai-Hancheng Express Railway, and 5 expressways, including Shanghai-Shaanxi, Shanghai-Chengdu, Jiguang, Hefu, and He'an, which crisscross the entire territory. It is only a 30-minute drive from Xinqiao International Airport. It only takes 24 minutes by train (high-speed rail) from Lu'an to the provincial capital Hefei. The school is located on the Moon Island, which is surrounded by water and has beautiful scenery. The school currently has 15 secondary colleges, 66 undergraduate majors, and 60 enrollment majors. The campus covers an area of ​​1,765 acres and a total construction area of ​​494,000 square meters. The library has a paper collection of 1.26 million volumes, 4.615 million electronic books, and a total value of 330 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment. The school currently has 20,745 full-time students, 1,313 faculty members, 1,045 full-time teachers, 350 associate professors or above (88 of whom are senior professors), 972 teachers with master's and doctoral degrees, and 39 people have been approved as provincial and municipal high-level talents.

The school attaches importance to scientific research and practical application, insists on applied research as the direction of scientific research, pays attention to industry-university-research cooperation, promotes teaching with scientific research, and strengthens teaching with scientific research. Since 2016, the school has published 65 academic works and edited 101 textbooks; 139 invention patents have been authorized; 21 provincial and ministerial awards have been won; 9 national projects and 256 provincial and ministerial projects have been approved. There are also provincial humanities and social sciences key research bases for the Integrity Culture Research Center, Anhui Red Culture Research Center and other humanities and social sciences research platforms. "Journal of Wanxi University" was rated as an excellent social science journal of national universities and an excellent science and technology journal of Chinese universities.

In recent years, Wanxi University has accelerated the pace of reform and development. In July 2014, it was approved as a project construction unit of Anhui Province's local applied high-level university. In the same year, it won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award. In 2017, the discipline of Chinese medicine was selected as a first-class discipline in Anhui Province, and the Dabie Mountain characteristic Chinese medicine resource conservation and development research team was selected as the leading talent team of Anhui universities, and was approved to establish the "Anhui Postdoctoral Research Station"; in 2018, the discipline of agricultural and forestry economic management was selected as a first-class discipline in Anhui Province, and the "Chinese Medicine Ecological Agriculture Innovation Team" was selected as the innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology; in 2019, it was approved as the "National Expert Service Base" of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the school was named the "First Anhui Civilized Campus"; in 2020, the discipline of Chinese medicine was selected as a peak discipline of Anhui universities; in 2021, it was approved as the Wanxi University Base of the Anhui Provincial Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.

The school actively expands foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established cooperation and cultural exchange relations with colleges and universities and research institutes in the United States, Britain, France, South Korea, Finland, Canada, New Zealand, Ukraine, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other countries and regions.
