Anhui University of Chinese Medicine is a pilot unit for the establishment and filing system management of Anhui Province's higher education revitalization plan "local characteristic high-level university construction".

Anhui University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1959. Its predecessor was the Anhui Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Continuing Education Class founded in 1952. In 1959, the Anhui Provincial Government officially approved the establishment of Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1970, Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was merged into Anhui Medical College. In 1975, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China approved the restoration of Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2000, Anhui Medical School was merged into Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2011, the provincial government approved the establishment of Anhui Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine on the basis of Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2013, the Ministry of Education agreed to rename Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine as Anhui University of Chinese Medicine. The school is a project university of the "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China" and a "local characteristic high-level" university construction university in Anhui Province.

The school is a national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine, a national base of modern science and technology industry of traditional Chinese medicine (Anhui), a national international cooperation base of traditional Chinese medicine, a national drug clinical research base, a national doctoral authorization unit, and a recommended unit for master's degree candidates without examination. It now covers a total area of ​​1,269.68 acres and has four campuses in Shaoquan Lake, Meishan Road, Shihe Road, and Lu'an Road. The library has a collection of 2.0716 million books, and the ancient books department has a collection of 33,000 ancient books and thread-bound books. It is a "national key protection unit for ancient books". The herbarium specimen room of the Chinese Medicine Resource Center stores more than 150,000 herbarium specimens of medicinal plants, which is the specimen room with the richest collection of specimens in medical schools across the country. Xin'an Medical Culture Center is the Anhui Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Propaganda and Education Base.

The university currently has 18,446 full-time students (including 3,037 doctors and masters), 16 secondary colleges (including 3 directly affiliated hospitals), and 7 non-directly affiliated hospitals. There are 4,474 faculty members, including 961 associate professors and above. There are 2 national medical masters, 1 Qihuang scholar, 2 national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, 2 young Qihuang scholars, 1 Wanjiang scholar, 1 young Wanjiang scholar, 56 instructors of the National Famous Old Chinese Medicine Academic Experience Project, 26 people enjoying special allowances from the State Council, 12 people enjoying special allowances from the provincial government, 5 leading talents in Anhui Province, 16 academic and technical leaders in Anhui Province, 13 reserve candidates, 11 leading talents in traditional Chinese medicine in Anhui Province, 3 leading talent teams in Anhui Province, 90 doctoral supervisors, 725 master supervisors, and 2 postdoctoral mobile workstations. There are 64 well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad serving as visiting professors of the school. In 2020, 8 new provincial "115" industrial innovation teams were added.

The school currently has 27 undergraduate majors, 4 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 10 provincial first-class major construction sites, and 8 national first-class undergraduate courses. There are 3 first-level discipline doctoral degree awarding sites, 1 doctoral professional degree authorization site, 6 first-level discipline master's degree awarding sites, 27 second-level discipline master's degree awarding sites, and 4 master's professional degree authorization sites. There is 1 Anhui Province Class II Peak Discipline, 1 Anhui Province Class III Peak Discipline, 2 Anhui Province Discipline Construction Major Projects, 17 State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Key Disciplines, 1 Anhui Province Class A Key Discipline, and 12 Anhui Province Class B Key Disciplines. There are 7 national clinical key specialties and 21 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The school takes talent cultivation as its top priority. The school currently has 2 national teaching teams, 23 provincial teaching teams, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national professional comprehensive reform pilot project, 2 national excellent doctor (TCM) education and training programs, and 2 national TCM colleges and universities teaching masters. It has won more than 600 national and provincial quality engineering projects, 1 first prize and 3 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 5 special prizes for provincial teaching achievements, and 13 first prizes.

The school focuses on highlighting the characteristics of running schools, setting up college students' extracurricular academic science and technology innovation and entrepreneurship funds and Yingzhuo scholarships, and carrying out college students' knowledge and skills competitions with "hundreds of people winning, thousands of people participating, and tens of thousands of people benefiting", such as "Challenge Cup", "Internet +", "Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship" and other competitions at all levels. In the past three years, more than 1,000 people have won more than 400 commendations and awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, including 129 national-level competitions (including 4 first prizes in national A-level competitions). The school attaches great importance to practice-based education and has won the title of Outstanding Unit for the National Summer "Three Going to the Countryside" Social Practice Activities for College and Technical School Volunteers and the Bronze Award for the China Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition. The average employment rate of graduates in the school has been above 94% in the past five years.

The school has vigorously promoted the strategy of strengthening the school through science and technology. In the past five years, it has undertaken nearly 2,000 scientific research projects at all levels, including nearly 200 national projects. In 2017, the school was approved for the National Key R&D Program. In 2019 and 2020, it achieved breakthroughs in the approval of key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation for two consecutive years, and presided over the Regional Innovation and Development Joint Fund. Since 2016, it has won 47 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including 1 second prize in the National Science and Technology Award and 5 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial level; published more than 800 high-level scientific research papers, including more than 200 papers at the second zone of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and obtained more than 60 authorized invention patents. There are currently 12 provincial science and technology innovation teams, 27 provincial and ministerial science and technology innovation platforms, and 18 provincial and ministerial science and technology innovation platforms have been jointly built with scientific research institutes, enterprises and other units.

The school has continuously strengthened the cooperation between industry, academia and research, signed cooperation agreements with 15 municipal and county governments such as Huangshan, Bozhou, and Lu'an, as well as a large number of well-known domestic traditional Chinese medicine enterprises, and built more than 50 industry-university-research cooperation bases. The school keeps up with the needs of local construction, and around the scientific and technological development and scientific and technological services mainly based on traditional Chinese medicine, strengthens the multi-level, multi-faceted and multi-mode comprehensive cooperation with local governments and related enterprises, carries out scientific and technological research, enterprise new product development, technical consultation and service and other aspects of cooperation, and formulates relevant government traditional Chinese medicine development plans. The Anhui Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industry Strategic Alliance has been established, and won the titles and honors of "National Advanced Collective of Science and Technology Special Envoys", "Advanced Collective of Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Management", and "Special Contribution Award for Promoting the Academic Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine".

Since 2016, the school has formulated more than 10 development plans for local governments; undertaken more than 200 school-enterprise cooperation projects, with an average annual horizontal cooperation research fund of more than 10 million yuan, and built 15 scientific and technological cooperation platforms with enterprises; participated in the construction of the "Top Ten Anhui Medicine" industrial demonstration base as the main technical support unit; guided the planting of Chinese medicinal materials by farmers in Bozhou, Lu'an, Huangshan, Chizhou, Xuancheng, Chuzhou, Anqing, Fuyang and other regions, benefiting tens of thousands of people. The school has effectively connected its advantageous disciplines with the local industrial layout, and promoted the development of the local economy while enhancing the technological innovation of enterprises.

The school has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 40 medical and educational institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Australia, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, and Japan. Students from more than 10 countries and regions have come to the school to study for doctoral, master's, and bachelor's degrees and participate in short-term and medium-term training.

The school focuses on improving the level of medical services. The First Affiliated Hospital is the largest Grade 3 Class A comprehensive Chinese medicine hospital in the province; the Second Affiliated Hospital is the first and largest Grade 3 Class A acupuncture specialty hospital in the country; the Third Affiliated Hospital is the third batch of key hospitals integrating Chinese and Western medicine in the country; the National Medical Hall is a medical unit that uses pure Chinese medicine as the main medical means.

At present, the school has developed into a higher Chinese medicine college with Chinese medicine as the main discipline, coordinated development of related disciplines, complete school levels, and distinctive Chinese medicine characteristics. Facing the future, the school will continue to adhere to the six major strategies of "quality-based school, talent-based school, science and technology-based school, culture-based school, law-based school, and open school", focus on cultivating "sincere and new" Chinese medicine talents, build a highland of collaborative innovation of Anhui Chinese medicine, lead the development of Anhui Chinese medicine industry, and build a local high-level university with distinctive Chinese medicine characteristics that is strong in the country, high-level in the province, and influential in the industry, and make greater contributions to building a beautiful Anhui with five major developments in modernization and serving the health of the people.
