University of Science and Technology of China

University of Science and Technology of China is a comprehensive national key university affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on cutting-edge science and high-tech, and also with medicine and distinctive liberal arts. The school currently has 30 colleges (faculties), including 7 colleges of science and education integration; it has Suzhou Institute of Advanced Studies, Shanghai Institute, Beijing Institute, Advanced Technology Institute, International Finance Institute, and the First Affiliated Hospital (Anhui Provincial Hospital).

The school was founded in Beijing in September 1958, with Guo Moruo as the first president. This is a red university founded by our party and a university established for the "two bombs and one satellite" cause. Its founding is called "a major event in the history of education and science in my country." After its establishment, the Chinese Academy of Sciences implemented the school-running policy of "running the school by the whole academy, combining institutes and departments", cultivating cutting-edge scientific and technological talents in emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary disciplines with a high starting point and a wide range, and brought together a group of famous scientists such as Yan Jici, Hua Luogeng, Qian Xuesen, Zhao Zhongyao, Guo Yonghuai, Zhao Jiuzhang, and Bei Shizhang. In the second year of its establishment, it was listed as a national key university.

In early 1970, the school moved to Hefei, Anhui Province. Since 1978, the school has been determined to reform and innovate boldly. It has taken the lead in proposing and implementing a series of educational reform measures with innovative spirit and forward-looking awareness in the country, establishing a junior class, building the first graduate school, building a national large-scale scientific project, and opening up schools to the world. It has become an important base for the country's high-quality talent training and high-level scientific research, and is one of the first universities in the country to implement the "985 Project" and "211 Project". In September 2017, the school was selected as one of the first batch of world-class universities and world-class discipline construction universities in the country, and a total of 11 disciplines were selected in the list of world-class discipline construction. Over the past 60 years since its founding, the university has adhered to the motto of "going both red and expert, integrating theory and practice", dared to be the first, forged ahead, cultivated a large number of outstanding talents with both moral integrity and ability, achieved a series of world-renowned scientific research results, and made important contributions to the development of the party and the country.

The school party committee takes General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important instructions on USTC as a guide for school development, constantly enhances the "four consciousnesses", strengthens the "four self-confidences", and achieves "two safeguards". Focusing on the two core tasks of "devoting oneself to moral education and persistently tackling key problems and innovation", it vigorously promotes the construction of "double first-class", plans the development of the "14th Five-Year Plan", and strives to run a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and USTC style.
