Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics originated from the Administrative Cadre School of Gansu Provincial People's Government established in 1952; in 1958, it was upgraded to Gansu Institute of Finance and Economics, under the leadership of Gansu Provincial People's Government, and implemented undergraduate education; in 1981, Lanzhou Business College was established, successively under the leadership of the former Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Domestic Trade; in 1998, a management system of co-construction by the central and local governments and with Gansu as the main body was implemented; in 2003, it was added as a master's degree-granting institution and carried out master's degree recruitment and training; in 2015, it was renamed Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics; in 2018, it was added as a doctoral degree-granting institution; in 2019, it officially carried out doctoral degree recruitment and training. As an important university of finance and economics in the western region of the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the school is located in the golden channel and hub of the Silk Road Economic Belt. It has a complete range of financial and economic disciplines and a great influence on the school.

The school currently has three campuses: Heping, Duanjiatan, and Donggang, covering an area of ​​more than 1,700 acres, with a school building area of ​​730,100 square meters and a total value of 95.0875 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment. The campus greening area is 315,400 square meters, and it was awarded the honorary title of "Garden-style Unit" by the Lanzhou Municipal People's Government. The library has a collection of 1.5573 million paper books and 6.7798 million electronic books. It is an important economic management literature and information center in Gansu Province. The school recruits students nationwide, and currently has 18,000 full-time undergraduates, 2,077 master's students, 28 doctoral students, 5,827 continuing education students, and 60 international students.

The school currently has more than 1,300 faculty and staff, including 1,027 full-time teachers, 584 teachers with professor and associate professor titles, 848 teachers with doctoral and master's degrees, 43 introduced project doctors and 272 post doctors. Among the full-time teachers, there are more than 130 high-level talents (times) such as experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, provincial and ministerial outstanding experts, candidates for the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, leading talents in Gansu Province, subject leaders in Gansu Province, "Feitian Scholars" in Gansu Province, and famous teachers in Gansu Higher Education Institutions.

The school currently has two first-class (characteristic) disciplines in Gansu Province, namely statistics and applied economics. It has 10 provincial key disciplines, namely statistics, theoretical economics, applied economics, law, Marxist theory, journalism and communication, management science and engineering, business administration, public administration, and design. It has a first-level discipline for doctoral degree authorization in statistics, 7 first-level master's degree programs in applied economics, statistics, theoretical economics, business administration, management science and engineering, design, and Marxist theory, and 10 master's professional degree authorization programs in business administration, accounting, finance, applied statistics, international business, insurance, asset evaluation, auditing, journalism and communication, and taxation. It is one of the provincial universities in Gansu. It is the first university in China to obtain the qualification of an MBA professional degree training institution and has the qualification of a graduate student recruitment institution for high-level key ethnic minority talents; it has 61 undergraduate majors, of which three majors, namely statistics, accounting, and marketing, are national characteristic professional construction points, six majors, namely finance, international economics and trade, statistics, accounting, financial management, and visual communication design, have been approved as national first-class undergraduate professional construction points, and 14 majors, namely economics, taxation, financial engineering, business English, marketing, human resource management, e-commerce, economic statistics, trade economics, journalism, business administration, auditing, public utilities management, and public art, have been approved as provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction points. 16 majors such as financial management are provincial characteristic major construction points, and 35 majors such as accounting, finance, and statistics are "first-class" enrollment majors in Gansu Province; there are 8 provincial teaching masters, 12 provincial teaching teams, 31 provincial quality courses, 22 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 4 first prizes for teaching achievements in Gansu Province, and 25 provincial teaching achievement cultivation projects; there are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 5 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national "off-campus practice education base for college students"; it was selected as the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and 3 people were selected into the Ministry of Education's national talent pool of 10,000 outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship mentors, there are 4 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education and teaching masters, 2 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship teaching teams, 1 of the first provincial "mass maker spaces", 4 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship pilot majors, and 3 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education MOOCs. After nearly 70 years of construction and development, the university has formed a discipline system with economics, management, statistics as the focus, law, literature, engineering, science, art and other disciplines cross-integrated and coordinated development, and built a platform for the cultivation of applied financial talents that can meet the needs of economic and social development in the northwest region.

The university closely focuses on major strategies such as the development of the western region of the country, the construction of the "Silk Road Economic Belt", and the construction of "three major platforms" such as the Gansu Province Circular Economy Demonstration Zone, the Chinese Civilization Heritage and Innovation Zone, and the Comprehensive Experimental Zone for Ecological Security Barriers. Relying on the advantages of economic management disciplines and talents, the university has formed a characteristic research direction mainly focusing on government decision-making consultation, modern commercial circulation, cultural industry development, and local legal system construction, and a service path of integration into development, intellectual support, and collaborative innovation, which has made positive contributions to the economic and social development of Gansu and even the northwest region. In the past five years, the university has undertaken a total of 212 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including 52 national scientific research projects and 31 humanities and social science projects of the Ministry of Education. It has published 517 papers in core academic journals at home and abroad, published 128 monographs, and won 39 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, including 6 first prizes. Relying on key scientific research innovation teams and scientific research bases (platforms), we have jointly built collaborative development research centers with relevant provincial departments, local governments, enterprises and institutions inside and outside the province, set up cooperation and exchange platforms, actively served regional development, and promoted the transformation of scientific research results. A total of 36 scientific research service results have been approved or adopted by government departments, 11 scientific research service social proposal results have been applied for, and 20 scientific research service social internal reference results have been applied for.

The school insists on open education, and has signed strategic cooperation agreements with domestic universities such as Central University of Finance and Economics, University of International Business and Economics, Gansu University of Political Science and Law, and Tianshui Normal University to strengthen in-depth cooperation in faculty team building, talent training, innovation and entrepreneurship education, and strive to promote undergraduate exchange training and credit recognition between schools, and promote inter-school educational resource sharing. The school attaches great importance to tapping school-local cooperation resources, and has established extensive strategic cooperation relationships in collaborative innovation, cooperative education, and entrepreneurship and employment with more than 10 local governments such as Dingxi City, Gansu Province, Chengguan District, Lanzhou City, and Songyang County, Zhejiang Province. At the same time, it actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation, takes the lead in joining the "Belt and Road" University Strategic Alliance, the "Belt and Road" Research Branch of the China Higher Education Society, the "China-Central and Eastern European Countries University Association" and the "Silk Road University Alliance", and is listed as a key training base for the "Western Young and Middle-aged Cadres English Intensive Project" by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and becomes one of the four major training bases in China for the English training project of the US-China Education Service Agency (ESEC). It has established cooperative school-running relationships with more than 40 colleges and universities in the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Belarus, and jointly established the "Cultural Education Research Center" with the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom, and established the first full-time "1+2+1" project Sino-US university experimental class in China, and won the "1+2+1" project 10th Anniversary Special Contribution Award. It has established the "Central Asia Business School" and the "Gansu Province Belarus Research Institute", and cooperated with the Singapore Confucius School to build the "Singapore Silk Road Confucius Classroom", creating a cutting-edge cooperative academic platform that actively serves the construction of the "Belt and Road" and opens up to the west and south.
