Qiqihar University was founded in 1952 and is the only provincial comprehensive general university in the western region of Heilongjiang Province. It is located on the shore of Labor Lake in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, the hometown of the famous red-crowned crane on the bank of the Nenjiang River. It covers an area of ​​1.39 million square meters and a building area of ​​850,000 square meters. It enjoys the reputation of "University around the Lake". The school is one of the three comprehensive universities in Heilongjiang Province. It is a national civilized unit, an excellent school for undergraduate teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and a key university in Heilongjiang Province's Higher Education Strong Province (Phase I).

In recent years, Qiqihar University has achieved leapfrog development. There are currently 23 colleges (departments) and 7 teaching and auxiliary units. There are 74 majors for enrollment, covering 11 disciplines, of which 5 majors, including Chinese Language and Literature, Computer Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Food Science and Engineering, and Clothing and Apparel Design, are national first-class professional construction points, and 16 majors, including Applied Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and English, are provincial first-class professional construction points. It has been approved for 27 provincial first-class courses, 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and 3 national and provincial college students' off-campus practice education bases. It is a provincial characteristic applied undergraduate demonstration and cultivation university and a provincial demonstration school for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. It has now approved the project of adding a new doctoral degree-granting institution, and has 18 first-level disciplines and 68 second-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 9 master's professional degree authorization categories, 4 provincial key disciplines, and the first-level discipline of Food Science and Engineering has been listed as a provincial higher education-strengthening province (Phase II) advantageous and distinctive discipline, and the plant-based food processing technology has been approved as a provincial "Double First-Class" advantageous and distinctive discipline construction project. It has 14 part-time doctoral supervisors and 511 master's supervisors, 3 of whom have been awarded the title of "Provincial Outstanding Postgraduate Supervisor" and 1 "Provincial Outstanding Postgraduate Supervisor Team"; it has been approved as the Engineering Research Center of Flax Processing Technology of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center of Plant-based Food Processing Technology of the Ministry of Education and the National Market Supervision Technology Innovation Center for Industrial Hemp, 6 provincial key laboratories such as surfactants and industrial additives, corn deep processing theory and technology, polymer-based composite materials, resistance gene engineering and cold-region biodiversity protection, micro-nano sensor devices and fine chemical catalytic synthesis, 3 provincial engineering technology research centers such as corn staple food industrialization engineering, fruit and vegetable grain beverage engineering, and agricultural multidimensional sensor information perception, and 2 provincial technology innovation centers such as agricultural microbial preparation industrialization and industrial hemp processing technology and a provincial collaborative innovation center for intelligent manufacturing equipment industrialization, and the Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences of the History and Culture of the Nenjiang River Basin. It is a provincial scientific research base and a provincial key think tank for the protection and inheritance of historical and cultural heritage of ethnic minorities. It is the chairman unit of the provincial corn deep processing industry technology innovation strategic alliance, and has been approved as a provincial technology transfer demonstration institution. It currently has 1,580 full-time teachers, including 789 teachers with senior professional titles, 363 teachers with doctoral degrees, 1 foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education, 5 Longjiang Scholars, 1 provincial "Six Batches" talent, 1 Longjiang Science and Technology Talent, 5 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council and the provincial government, more than 40 people with national and provincial and ministerial honorary titles such as National Model Teachers, National Excellent Teachers, Provincial Model Teachers, Provincial Excellent Teachers, Provincial Teaching Masters, Provincial Teaching Rookies, and Provincial Teaching Experts, there are 6 provincial leading talent echelons, 12 municipal leading talent echelons, 3 provincial teaching teams, and 2 provincial university science and technology innovation teams. In the past five years, the university has been approved for 2,340 scientific research projects of various types and levels, including 348 national, provincial and ministerial projects, and won the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award and the second prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award. It has signed 251 "four-technology" contracts, won 89 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, and the number of high-level academic papers published in core journals and retrieved by the three major retrieval systems has increased year by year.

The school enrolls students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country. There are currently 28,249 students, including 25,920 undergraduates and 2,329 postgraduates, 80 international students and 7,958 adults. The enrollment scale and employment quality are steadily increasing.

The school has advanced teaching conditions and facilities. The library has a collection of more than 2.9 million books, more than 1.97 million electronic books, 30 Chinese and foreign databases, and 5 reading rooms for social sciences, foreign language materials, etc. There are 282 network multimedia classrooms and modern language training rooms. Each multimedia classroom has the function of a live broadcast classroom. The network multimedia teaching system control room realizes the centralized management and control of multimedia classrooms. It has a first-class gymnasium, swimming pool, concert hall and student cultural and sports activity center in the province. The school regularly publishes 3 academic journals for public release at home and abroad.

In 2012, the large-scale folk music and painting "Daur People" successfully created by the school-local cooperation won 11 awards including the National Minority Art Performance Gold Award, and was selected as one of the 50 "Respect for China's Excellent Traditional Culture" characteristic display projects determined by the Ministry of Education.

The university attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, and has established cooperative relations with nearly 70 colleges and related institutions in 13 countries including the United States, Japan, Russia, and South Korea, and has carried out inter-school exchanges, academic exchanges and cooperative education, and has achieved positive results. It was identified by the Ministry of Education as a "China-Russia College Students Art Exchange Base" and a "National Government Scholarship Program for International Students in China".
