Harbin University of Commerce was founded in 1952. It is the first multidisciplinary commercial university in New China and one of the ten key universities in Heilongjiang Province. The school is positioned as a teaching and research university. In 2006, it was rated as "excellent" in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of ordinary colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it was selected as a construction institution of the national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". In 2013, it became a member of the Sino-Russian Economic University Alliance. In 2014, it was awarded the title of the fourth "National Civilized Unit". In 2017, it won the "National May 1st Labor Award". In 2018, the business administration discipline entered the ranks of domestic first-class disciplines in Heilongjiang Province, and the applied economics discipline entered the list of discipline project construction of the Heilongjiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Discipline System Innovation Project. In 2020, it was rated as a "demonstration school for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform" in Heilongjiang Province.

The school covers a total area of ​​1.1655 million square meters, and the total area of ​​school buildings is 661,800 square meters. There are 23,725 full-time undergraduate students, 198 full-time doctoral students, and 2,432 master's students.

The school has a strong faculty, with 1,540 faculty and staff. Among them, there are 1,180 full-time teachers, including 253 professors and 575 associate professors; 746 teachers with master's and 536 with doctoral degrees respectively; 980 postgraduate tutors, including 105 doctoral tutors. There is 1 member of the subject evaluation group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, 1 national candidate of the "New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project", 1 selected person of the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, 18 experts with special government allowances from the State Council, 7 "Longjiang Scholars" professors, 16 experts with special allowances from the provincial government, 13 provincial (ministerial) young and middle-aged experts, 42 provincial leading talent echelon leaders and reserve leaders, and 15 provincial teaching masters.

The school has 68 undergraduate majors covering eight major disciplines, namely economics, management, engineering, law, literature, science, medicine, and art; 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 20 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 13 first-level master's degree authorization points, 70 second-level master's degree authorization points, 1 independent second-level master's degree authorization point, and 16 professional master's degree authorization points; 4 provincial first-level key disciplines and 1 provincial key discipline group (tertiary industry development and innovation); in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, the business administration major was rated as B, and applied economics and food science and engineering were rated as B-. It has 3 postdoctoral research stations and 2 postdoctoral research workstations; it has won 3 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 6 national characteristic majors, 11 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 3 national comprehensive reform pilot projects, 4 national quality courses, 4 national first-class courses, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and 28 national planning textbooks; it has 1 national key construction vocational teacher training base of the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial talent training model experimental zone, 1 provincial economic and trade talent training base for Russia, 15 provincial key majors, 9 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 provincial characteristic application-oriented undergraduate demonstration major cluster, 3 provincial comprehensive reform pilot projects, 49 provincial quality (first-class) courses, 5 provincial teaching teams, and 5 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.

The school currently has 1 National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Innovative Anti-tumor Drugs, 1 Natural Engineering Research Center for Anti-tumor Drugs of the Ministry of Education, 4 provincial key laboratories, 1 provincial-ministerial joint key laboratory, 2 provincial engineering research centers, and 4 provincial key laboratories for ordinary colleges and universities; it has 1 of the first batch of key think tanks in Heilongjiang Province, 1 provincial key research base for philosophy and social sciences, 1 provincial social science research center, 2 key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Provincial Department of Education, 1 provincial collaborative innovation center, 1 provincial small and medium-sized enterprise research center, and 1 provincial social organization and social construction training base.

The school has been recruiting students from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country. In the 69 years since its establishment, the school has trained a total of 150,000 professional talents of various types for the society, many of whom have become famous experts and scholars, successful entrepreneurs, and outstanding party and government management cadres, with remarkable achievements in talent training.

The school has a number of scientific research results to fill domestic gaps. In 1959, China's first food machinery, the 601 dumpling machine, was developed; the use of chlorella solved the problem of the harm of alternative food to human health, with remarkable results. In 1960, the "double-entry accounting method for property receipts and payments", one of the three major accounting methods in my country, was first created. In the same year, the "read, watch, discuss, lecture, do, research, write" teaching method research was commended and promoted at the National Cultural and Educational Heroes Conference. Guangming Daily reported on this teaching experience of our school on May 29, 1960. In 1981, the academic theory of cooperative development of the Northeast Asian Economic Circle was first proposed. In 1988, the first computer automatic refueling machine in China was developed. In 1996, the first financial and monetary museum in colleges and universities was built, and a number of influential scientific research results were launched. In 1999, the "Commercial Automation Technology Integration Demonstration Project", a major national scientific and technological project, was completed. After 2000, the school's research results in applied economics, business administration, traditional Chinese medicine, food science and other fields have had an important impact on the country.

In the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 900 vertical projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation of China, the National Science and Technology Support Program, and the Ministry of Education, and more than 300 horizontal projects of various types, applied for more than 500 invention patents and utility model patents, and authorized 180. The scientific research results have won more than 200 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, published more than 300 books, and published more than 5,000 papers. The school publicly edits and publishes three academic journals, including "Business Research", "Journal of Harbin University of Commerce (Natural Science Edition)", and "Journal of Harbin University of Commerce (Social Science Edition)". Among them, "Business Research" is a CSSCI source journal, a national Chinese core journal, and an excellent academic journal with international influence in China. "Journal of Harbin University of Commerce (Social Science Edition)" is a CSSCI extended version source journal and a national top 100 social science journal.

The school attaches great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established educational cooperation and academic exchange relations with 108 institutions in 27 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, etc. It is a training base for studying abroad of the China (Ministry of Education) Study Abroad Service Center, a base for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), a cooperative institution of the Ministry of Commerce's "Special Plan for Foreign Aid Advanced Degree Education", and an organizer of the Ministry of Commerce's foreign aid training projects. In the past ten years, it has trained more than 3,000 long-term and short-term international students from more than 50 countries, including South Korea, Russia, Japan, Poland, France, Ukraine, etc. More than 2,000 government officials, corporate executives and school teachers from 96 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean, the South Pacific and the CIS have been trained.
